Khari Mateen is no stranger to the industry. His musical stylings are peppered in the work of a number of well-known acts including The Roots, Jill Scott, Dice Raw and his band, Elevator Fight. But this project–his first independent venture– he takes more personally, and rightfully so.
The last nine months have taken him on a journey with echoing themes of deep love, expression and self-discovery. Mateen, who picked up his first instrument at age six and has been speaking through music ever since, funneled them into making a project that reveals who he is both as a person and an artist. The end result is this self-titled solo debut: seven bold tracks that layer original, unapologetic lyrics over his already distinct production style.
Khari delivers a diverse blend of sounds, taking us from “SAY IT AGAIN!!!,” a funk-filled blitz showcasing his instrumentation, to “Mother,” a down-tempo, nostalgic tribute to the woman who raised him. Each of the tracks may stem from different places in Mateen’s life, but collectively, act as one chapter in an ever-evolving musical story. In it, he weaves signatures you can always expect from him, now and in the future: organic sounds and honest sentiments.
